It was such a long way back
The story's warped and cracked
It's just a raided tomb
I feel sorry for you
Even if I hate myself
Can't take it back now
He said,
"Don't you feel regret?"
I said,
"No
Not for you
Not for you"
And all the guilt in the world
Could not save you
As useless as a raided tomb
I said,
"Why don't I just kill myself?"
He said,
"Would you?"
No
Not for you
Not for you
He said,
"I'm only here for me and mine"
He said,
"I'm only here to fight"
He said
He wants a better world
He wants a better world
Don't you?
This one's an empty urn
It's a raided tomb
about
The song tomb is about people who use the past against others, a type of exploitation employed to further themselves in life. The empty urn implies that the world is doomed regardless of any "good" intentions on their part, waiting to receive its ashes and the raided tomb illustrates the shamelessness with which people try and misrepresent others, their lives, and their "dark pasts" or perceived transgressions. Searching relentlessly for anything they can exchange for social currency until every last thing is gone. Nothing is sacred and the truth is forever buried. It also questions when one should or shouldn't feel remorse for what they or, perhaps, their perceived group have done. This is NOT, however, an "anti woke" song complaining about cancel culture, and while 'he' could easily describe anyone with very extreme views or a petty, tribalistic nature regardless of politics, he is most certainly "The Man". Most of the lyrics were inspired by the social barriers I and those close to me have experienced due to stigmas around mental illness, homelessness, substance abuse, LGBTQ identity, and poverty.
Bleak, throbbing work that lands halfway between coldwave and shoegaze, this Berlin group hits that spot just under the breastbone. Bandcamp New & Notable Feb 15, 2017
